The Steinlage Family of St. Lucas, Iowaand Kansas




The Steinlage family came from Bornholt and Druffel. It appearsthree brothersarrived in St. Lucas after 1880.

Gerhard Ferdinand Steinlage married Bernadine Witreck. They had four known children: Eberhard who remained in Germany and Ferdinand, Gerhard H., and William who came to St. Lucas.

2-Eberhard Steinlage was born from 1850 to 1860. Eberhard married Mary Elbracht Hulseweb. Mary was born from 1860 to 1865. They had ten children but only one is known.

3-Joseph John Steinlage was born on 5 Dec 1881 in Bornholte, Nordrhein-Westfalen, died on 1 May 1968 in Kelly at age 86, and was buried in St. Bedes. Joseph married Agnes Maria Niehues on 21 Feb 1911 in St. Bede's Catholic Church, Kelly, daughter of Henry Niehues and Bernadine Koening. Agnes was born on 8 Oct 1886 in Borringhausen, Damme, Germany, died on 3 Apr 1971 in Kelly at age 84, and was buried in St. Bedes. They had seven children: Eberhard B., Henry William, Aloysius August, Frank Joseph, Benedict F. (Ben), Mary, and Lambert Henry.

Mr. Joseph Steinlage passed away Wednesday morning, May 1, 1968 at the Seneca Hospital after an extended illness of several months. He was 86. He was born at Bornholte, Westfalen, Germany, on December 5, 1881. His parents were Eberhard and Mary Elbracht Hulseweg Steinlage. He was the second eldest in the family of ten children. In April 1899, Joseph came to Lucas, Iowa, where his three uncles, William, Gerhard and Ferdinand had previously settled. They also came from around Westfalen several years before. In Iowa he was a farmhand for his uncle. In 1900 he was 18 yrs. old, living in the home of his Uncle William in St. Lucas. Around 1907 he came to Seneca, where he worked for Mat Snyder for one year then rented the Mrs. Anna Boeding farm east of Kelly for one year before buying the Charles Jorden farm 3 miles southeast of Kelly. While living there he met Agnes Niehues, who was keeping house for her brother, Frank, on a farm a mile east of the Jorden farm. They were married on Feb. 21, 1911 in St. Bede's Church by Rev. Edwin Kassens, O.S.B., and celebrated their golden wedding in February, 1961 at Kelly. He was a member of St. Bede's Catholic Church at Kelly and of its St. Bede's Society and also was a member of the Knights of Columbus. Mr. Steinlage was a man who enjoyed life and one who was able to retain a spirit of cheerfulness even through his last suffering. He loved his grandchildren and looked forward to their visits. Singing was a joy for Mr. Steinlage and many a wedding will be remembered by some of his German songs. He is survived by his wife, Agnes of the home; by six sons, Eberhard of San Diego, Calif.; Henry, Frank, Aloysius, Benedict and Lambert of Corning and by one daughter, Mary, of the home. Burial was in the parish cemetery. The casket bearers were grandsons: Leander, Leon, Ralph, Cletus, Leroy and Duane Steinlage. Servers of the Mass were grandsons Bobbie Joe, Gerard, Danny, Damian and Keith Steinlage.

4-Eberhard B. Steinlage was born on 7 Mar 1912 in Kelly and died on 29 Jul 2000 in Sacramento at age 88. Eberhard married Irene Burns in 1943. They had three children. The marriage ended in divorce.

Eberhard B. Steinlage, 88, formerly of Kelly, Kansas, died Saturday, July 29, 2000, in a Sacramento hospital following a lengthy illness. He was born on a farm southeast of Kelly, Kansas, on March 7, 1912, the son of Joseph and Agnes Niehues Steinlage. He grew up in the Kelly area, attended St. Bede's School, and helped on the family farm. He graduated from Maur Hill High School in Atchison. He taught in a country school near his home for a short period of time before moving to California. He was employed by Purity Grocery Chain and became a store manager. At Yuba, California, he began work for the Yuba Consolidated Gold Fields as an electrician on the company's huge gold dredgers.
During World War II, he served in both the U.S. Army and the Army Air Corps. In 1943 he was married to Irene Burns, and there were three children born to that union. They were later divorced. After the war, he returned to Consolidated at Yuba and then took a job with Woodleaf Box & Lumber Co. as head electrician. He joined Convair Astronautics (General Dynamics) in San Diego and worked on some of our nation's first missiles. Later he worked in Fresno for American Beauty Pasta Company where he supervised the re-tooling of the machinery, bringing it into the state of the art and increasing production.
Following his retirement, he lived in Coon Rapids, Minnesota, with his son and daughter-in-law, Ben and Sandi Steinlage, for nine years. He moved to Country View Estates in Seneca, Kansas in August of 1999 and to Sacramento in April of 2000.
Survivors are a son, Bernard "Ben" Steinlage of Coon Rapids, Minnesota; two daughters, Christine Forte of Orangeville, California and Carol Bly of Folsom, California; three brothers, Frank, Aloysius, and Benedict "Ben" Steinlage all of Corning, Kansas; a sister, Mary Steinlage of Kelly, Kansas; seven grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and five step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Lambert Steinlage.

5-Bernard (Ben) Joseph Steinlage was born on 10 Oct 1944 in Butte Co., California. He married Julie M. Christensen - Lewis on 18 Oct 1965 in Sacramento. Bernard next married Kathryn Koreen Christopherson about 1972. They had three children. The marriage ended in divorce on 8 May 1987.

5-Christine Evelyn Steinlage was born on 29 Feb 1948 in Butte Co., California. Christine married Jay James Forte. Christine next married Michael L. Bloch. Michael was born in 1946. They had two children: Alain Michel and Paul Stuart.

4-Henry William Steinlage was born on 24 Feb 1913 in Kelly, died on 3 Aug 1974 in Topeka, Shawnee Co., Kansas at age 61, and was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Corning. Henry married Loretta Bernadine Wessel on 29 Dec 1940 in St. Mary's, daughter of Heinrich Wessel and Bernadine Macke. Loretta was born on 3 Aug 1914 in St. Benedict, Nemaha Co., Kansas and died on 2 Dec 2001 in Crestview Manor Care Home at age 87. They had six children.

Henry W. Steinlage, 61, of Corning died August 3, 1974 at Stormont-Vail Hospital in Topeka where he had been taken to the emergency room. Henry had been ill with leukemia for two years.
Henry was born February 24, 1913 to Joseph J. and Agnes Niehues Steinlage on a farm southeast of Kelly. He grew up there and attended St. Bede's School. As a young man he farmed north of
Corning, Kansas where later, after marrying Loretta Wessel, they lived and raised their family. Henry continued working on the family farm until his death in 1974.

Loretta B. Steinlage, 87, of Corning, Kansas, died Sunday, December 2, 2001, at Crestview Manor Care Home where she had been a resident since July of 1998.
She was born August 3, 1914, on a farm south of St. Benedict. On October 29, 1940, she married Henry Steinlage at St. Mary's Church in St. Benedict. They farmed and raised livestock northeast of Corning until Henry became ill in 1974. She raised chickens and took care of fruit trees. Her husband died August 3, 1974. Loretta moved into Corning in the spring of 1979 and lived there until her health began to fail. She was a member of St. Patrick's Church, the Altar Society at the church, and quilted at the church in Corning. She was a member of the Arthur Mills Post of American Legion Auxiliary and the Corning Home Demonstration Unit both at Corning. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, embroidery and other handwork. Survivors are two sons, Leander Steinlage of Centralia, and Gerard Steinlage of Corning; four daughters, Theresa Mulryan, Joann Dawdy, and Rosemary Spangler, all of Topeka, and Mary Kay Hermesch of Goff, KS; 25 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. Besides her husband, Henry, she was preceded in death by six sisters, Mary Burdick, Rose Deters, Agnes Tangeman, Hilda Broxterman, Elizabeth Olberding, and Frances Stallbaumer.

5-Theresa Marie Steinlage was born in 1943. Theresa married Francis Matthias Mulryan, son of Denis Francis Mulryan and Mary Elizabeth Lierz. They had three children.

6-Brenda Lee Mulryan was born about 1967. She married Steve M. Duncan. They had a daughter.

5-Leander Gerard Steinlage was born on 24 May 1947, died on 19 Jul 2002 in Centralia, Nemaha Co., Kansas at age 55, and was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Corning. Leander married Carol J. on 23 Nov 1968. They had five children.

He was born May 24, 1947, at Axtell, Kansas, the son of Henry and Loretta Wessel Steinlage. Leander grew up on the family farm at Corning, graduated from Corning Grade School, and from the Corning High School in 1965. As a young man he farmed with his dad. He was a member of the U.S. Army National Guard at Marysville, Kansas and attained the rank of Sergeant E5. In 1968 his unit was activated for duty at Ft. Carson, Colorado. After his discharge from active duty in November of 1969, he continued to train with the National Guard.
On November 23, 1968, he married Carol Sudbeck at St. Mary's Church at St. Benedict. She survives of the home. They lived on a farm south of Centralia for a year before moving to their present location southeast of Centralia, where they farmed and raised livestock. From 1983 to 1988 Leander was a custom wheat harvester, working across the wheat belt from Texas into Wyoming. In 1988 he started working for Keim Trucking Service in Sabetha, Kansas, first in the mechanic shop, then later as a driver in the area. In 1990 he became a long-haul trucker and enjoyed driving throughout the United States.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Church and the Arthur L. Mills Post #37 of the American Legion, where he always participated in the Memorial Day Services, both in Corning. Leander liked farming and doing mechanic work. Family gatherings were special times, and he especially liked dancing.
Survivors besides his wife, Carol, are a son, David Steinlage of Des Moines, Iowa; four daughters, including twins, Angela Conklin of Topeka and Karla Lueger of Shawnee, Kansas; two other daughters, Barbara Steinlage of Mission, Kansas, and Janet Reinecke, also of Shawnee, Kansas; a brother, Gerard Steinlage of Corning; four sisters, Theresa Mulryan, Joann Dawdy, and Rosemary Spangler, all of Topeka, and Mary Kay Hermesch of Goff, Kansas; and five grandchildren.

6-Karla Joann Steinlage was born in Oct 1969. Karla married Gerald James Lueger. Gerald was born in Dec 1967. They had a son.

4-Aloysius August Steinlage was born on 12 Dec 1916 in Kelly, died on 1 Dec 2000 in County View Estates Care Home at age 83, and was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Corning. Aloysius married Edna Mary Boeding on 11 Aug 1948 in St. Bedes, daughter of Herman Joseph Boeding and Anna Mary Haverkamp. Edna was born on 1 Jul 1919 in Nemaha Co., Kansas and died on 23 Aug 1998 in Corning, Kansas at age 79. They had seven children.

He was born December 12, 1916, on a farm southeast of Kelly, Kansas, the son of Joseph and Agnes Niehues Steinlage. He attended a country school and St. Bede's School at Kelly. He helped on the family farm.
Mr. Steinlage farmed southeast of Corning and operate a grade A dairy from 1964 to 1981. He helped his son raised livestock and run the dairy for many years after he retired. On December 31, 1941, he entered the US Army and served with the 591st Engineers and built bridges in the European Theater during World War II. The 591st was instrumental in the successful crossing of the Rhine River and in Africa.
 He returned to the farm from the military service in 1945.  He served on the St. Patrick's Church board in the early 1950s. He was a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus Council No. 1769 in
Seneca and Arthur Mills Post No. 37 of the American Legion in Corning. He participated in many of the 591st Engineers' reunions and hosted the 1979 reunion at his farm in Seneca.
He married Edna Boeding on Aug. 11, 1948, in Kelly. She died Aug. 23, 1998. Mr. Steinlage also was preceded in death by three grandchildren, Kevin Kramer, Oct. 11, 1974, and Anna Marie Kramer, Jan. 21, 1977, and Mark Steinlage, April 18, 1989.
Survivors include four sons, Robert Steinlage, Ozawkie, Cletus Steinlage and Damian Steinlage, both of Topeka, and Paul Steinlage, Corning; three daughters, Elaine Kramer, Sabetha, Linda Roggenkamp, Onaga, and Melvina Ball, Eagle, Neb.; two brothers, Frank Steinlage, Seneca, and Ben Steinlage, Corning; a sister, Mary Steinlage, Kelly; and 16 grandchildren.
   

5-Robert Joseph Steinlage was born on 16 Feb 1950. Robert married Linda Hortenstine. They had one son.  In 1975 they lived in Denver.

4-Frank Joseph Steinlage was born on 20 Jan 1915 in Kelly, died on 28 Jan 2003 in County View Estates Care Home at age 88, and was buried in St. Patrick's. Frank married Frances B. Glissman on 22 Apr 1936 in St. Bedes, daughter of Bernard Glissman and Agnes Enneking. Frances was born on 19 Dec 1915 and died on 3 Jul 2003 in Seneca at age 87. They had nine children.

They lived and farmed northeast of Corning for three years before they bought a farm northwest of Corning. They owned a dairy operation, farmed and raised livestock. In 1982 they moved to Corning where they had built a home. Frank suffered a stroke on August 15, 1996.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Church at Corning where he served on the church board when they built St. Patrick's Church and established the cemetery in Corning. He volunteered his time as custodian, as well as other doing other church work. Frank had served on the Corning School Board, Illinois Township Board, as a volunteer fireman, and was instrumental in getting the Co-op Elevator built in Corning. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus #1769 for over 50 years at Seneca. Frank enjoyed music and played the harmonica.
Survivors besides his wife, Frances, are seven sons, Melvin Steinlage and Cyril Steinlage, both of Seneca, Kenneth Steinlage of Sabetha, Kansas, Lester Steinlage and Leon Steinlage, both of Topeka, Ralph Steinlage of Scranton, Kansas, Lynn Steinlage of Corning; two daughters, Gladys Rempe of Corning and Janice Holthaus of Seneca; a sister, Mary Steinlage of Kelly; 42 grandchildren; and 59 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kathy Steinlage on February 28, 1974; great-granddaughters, Madeline Renner on July 9, 1999 and Libby Wenger on January 9, 1991; and five brothers, Henry, Lambert, Eberhard, Aloysius, and Benedict.

5-Melvin Steinlage was born in 1938 in Kansas. Melvin married Noreen in 1960. Noreen was born in 1938. They had four children.

He grew up on the family farm south of Seneca. He was employed at the local farm cooperative in Seneca, eventually becomming the crop production manager. He joined AG Service LLC, a risk management Service Co., in Hutchinson. There he assisted clients with compliance with OSHA, DOT, KDOT, DPA, KDHE and KDA. In 2001 he received the Jim Widrig Distinguished Service Award, a full honor bestowed on deserving people in the chemical and fertilizer application industry.

4-Benedict F. (Ben) Steinlage was born on 17 Jun 1918 in Kelly, Nemaha Co., Kansas, died on 30 Nov 2001 in Onaga Hospital at age 83, and was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Corning. Benedict married Josephine E. Boden on 26 Aug 1941 in Tipton, Mitchell Co., Kansas. Josephine was born on 9 Jan 1916 and died on 20 Nov 1995 at age 79. They had 12 children.

Benedict F. Steinlage, 83, of Corning, Kansas, died Friday November 30, 2001, at the Community Hospital, Onaga, Kansas. He was treated for esophageal cancer a year ago and recently was diagnosed with metastasis to the liver.
He was born June 17, 1918, on a farm southeast of Kelly, Kansas, the son of Joseph J. and Agnes Niehues Steinlage. Benedict attended St. Bede's School at Kelly and helped on the family farm.
On August 26, 1941, he married Josephine E. Boden at St. Boniface Church, Tipton, KS. They lived northeast of Corning. He was a lifelong farmer and stockman. Later he also worked in several locations for the Hamm Rock Quarry. His wife, Josephine, died November 20, 1995; a son, Roger Steinlage, died on April 12, 1995; and a a great-grandson William James Anderson, died on July 7, 1997.
He was a member of St. Patrick's Church and served on the board of the church at Corning,
Survivors are six sons, Leroy Steinlage, Duane Steinlage, and Keith Steinlage, all of Topeka, James Steinlage of Olathe, Daniel Steinlage of Lawrence, KS, and Alan Steinlage of Kansas City, MO; four daughters, Darlene Setter of Arlington, VA, Maxine Wiechert of Topeka, Louella Talley of Corning, and Marceil Hasenkamp of Soldier, KS; a brother, Frank Steinlage of Seneca; and a sister Mary Steinlage of Kelly; 24 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife and son, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Eberhard, Henry, Lambert, and Aloysius Steinlage.

5-Darlene Steinlage was born on 28 Oct 1942. Darlene married Kenneth Setter.

5-Maxine Steinlage was born in 1944. Maxine married Stanley J. Wiechert. They had two children.

Plaintiff asks for $47,146.88 with interest and costs for pain, suffering, loss of time, medical expenses past and future, hired help, damages to milk house and phone calls. Leona Steinlage asks for $5,000 for loss of consortion.
In 2004 they won the Pioneer Dairyman Award. They farmed 250 acres.

He began farming in partnership with his father and bought the farm in 1982. Gary and Mary Steinlage operate a picture-perfect dairy farm, consisting of registered red and white Holsteins, Guernseys, Brown Swiss, and black and white Holsteins. "We've got about every kind of cow there is," Gary Steinlage said. In addition to having the top red and white Holstein herd in the state, they also have six of the top 10 cows. Gary explained that red and white Holsteins and Brown Swiss produce a higher protein content in the milk, and also admitted that the mixing of breeds is done somewhat for pleasure.

They farmed near West Union. Nine family members in one car were injured Sunday in the car-motorcycle accident one mile south of St. Lucas that killed Randy Bruess, 13, and his 15-year-old brother Darian Bruess. They were killed when they were riding a motorcycle eastbound on a gravel road approaching county road W14. Their motorcycle did not stop at the stop sign and was struck by a car traveling south on W14. The driver of the vehicle was Timothy Steinlage, 17, of West Union. The cyclists were thrown from the motorcycle, which came to rest on the southwest shoulder approximately 100 feet from the intersection. The car came to rest in the south ditch. Nine passengers in the Steinlage vehicle were taken to Palmer Memorial Hospital in West Union. One of them, Jason Steinlage, was later transported by Air Care to the hospital in Rochester. Those treated and later released included Keith Steinlage, 15, Tony Steinlage, 15, Amy Steinlage, 13, Lisa Steinlage, 14, Jerry Steinlage, 9, Kenny Steinlage, 10, and Julie Steinlage, 8. Scott Steinlage, 7, was not injured. None of the occupants of the car were wearing seat belts, according to the State Patrol, which was assisted by the Fayette County Sheriff's Office. The 1980 Buick, owned by Nicholas Steinlage, sustained $2,000 in damage.

He served on the Nemaha County Commission from 1982 to 1988, and on the District No. 442 School Board during the consolidation of the high school. He earlier farmed near Kelly, and before that he worked on his uncle's farm in West Union, Iowa.
He was born Jan. 6, 1917, on a farm southeast of Kelly, the son of Frank and Elizabeth Steinlage Niehues.
Mr. Niehues was a member of St. Bede's Church in Kelly, the St. Joseph Sodality, and he served on the church board in Kelly. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus Council at Seneca. He also was a member of the board of directors of the Nemaha County Historical Society, The Nemaha County Co-op, Illinois Township and NECAP. He was past president of the Nemaha County Farmers Union and was an Illinois Township Democratic Committeeman for many years.
He married Regina "Jean" Neusch on May 8, 1951, in St. Francis, Texas. She survives.
Other survivors include five sons, Frank Niehues, Leo Niehues and Roy Niehues, all of Corning, Galen Niehues, Seneca, and Gary Niehues, Lincoln, Neb.; two daughters, Catherine Williams, Topeka, and Theresa Sudbeck, Seneca; a brother Ferdinand Niehues, Goff; five sisters, Norbertine Miller and Frances Rottinghaus, both of Seneca, Bernadine Niehues and Rita Niehues, both of Goff, and Florence Hermesch, Meriden; and 16 grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial celebrated at St. Bede's Church in Kelly. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Francis Steinlage, 82, of Corning, died Thursday, January 15, 2004, at his home. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer two years ago.
He was born March 28, 1921, on a farm south of Kelly, the son of Ferdinand and Dora Haverkamp Steinlage. He grew up there, attended St. Bede's School, and worked on the family farm.
On November 28, 1950, he married Marjorie Burdiek at St. Bede's Church at Kelly. They lived northeast of Corning, where they farmed, raaised livestock and operated a dairy. They moved into Corning in November of 1996. Francis became semi-retired, but he still enjoyed helping his son on the farm. He was a member of St. Patrick's Church at Corning where he was a lay minister, had served on the church council and also had served several terms on the St. Patrick's School Board. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 61 years. Farming and working were his main two activities, but he especially enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in sports.
Survivors are his wife, Marjorie of the home, a son, Dale of Corning; 4 daughters, Dorothy Becker of Centralia, Janet Hiltibrand of Corning, Donna Haverkamp of Auburn, Joyce Boeckman of Goff; 3 brothers, Norbert of Seneca, and Elton and Ronald of Corning; 3 sisters, Melita Bodensteiner of Waucoma, IA, Alma Kramer of Goff, and Geraldine Kramer of Corning; and 15 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two daughters Chari Steinlage on April 9, 1970, and Shirley Weinert on April 9, 1983, and a sister, Lorena Olberding, September 10, 1998.

In Jan of 1945, he was inducted into the armed forces and went to Fort Snelling. In June of 1946, his parents transfered the farm to Irvin except for 18 acres.

Josepha was born on 7 May 1903 in St. Benedict, Nemaha Co., Kansas and died on 14 Jul 2001 in Seneca at age 98. They had ten children.

William A. Steinlage, 87, of Seneca, died late Tuesday, June 2, 1987, at St. Francis Hospital in Topeka. He had been in failing health and had recently fallen and suffered a broken hip.
He was born July 23, 1899, at St. Lucas, Iowa, the son of Gerhard and Anna Hemkendries Steinlage. William attended St. Lucas Church and School. In 1926 he came to Kansas, where he was employed by his brother, Ferdinand in farming. On October 26, 1927, he married Josepha Haverkamp at St. Bede's Church, Kelly. William was a farmer and a stockman on the same farm three miles south of Kelly until they retired and moved to Seneca in 1974. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary and had been married almost 60 years.
William was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Church, The St. Joseph Society, and a former member of St. Bede's Church. Bill, as he was known to his many friends and relatives, enjoyed visiting and had a keen sense of humor. He was always interested in his family, and especially his grandchildren and great - grandchildren.
Survivors besides his wife, Josepha, of the home are four sons,
Elmer of Corning, John of Baileyville, Marvin of Goff, and William of Holton; four daughters, Mary Ann Olberding of Seneca, Mrs. Randy (Arlene) Lowe of Irvine, Calif., Mrs. Dale (Vernal) Strathman of Topeka, and Mrs. Larry (Joella) King of Hoyt; 25 grandchildren and six great - grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Gerald Steinlage, on November 29, 1967; a grandson, Craig Steinlage, on July 16, 1968; eight brothers, Bernard, Bernard Henry, Ferdinand, Joseph, John Aloy, Joseph Nicholas, and Carl; and two sisters, Elizabeth and Bernadine. Burial was in St. Bede's Cemetery at Kelly. Pallbearers were Tom Steinlage, Brian Steinlage, Keith J. Olberding, Eric Steinlage,Steve Steinlage, Jeremy King and Robert Steinlage.

Josepha E. Steinlage, 98, of Seneca, Kansas, died Friday, July 13, 2001, at the Nemaha Valley Community Hospital in Seneca. She was transferred there from Crestview Manor Care Home in Seneca where she had been a resident since February of 1999.
She was born on a farm north of St. Benedict, Kansas on May 7, 1903, the daughter of Frank and Mary A. Stegeman Haverkamp. In 1906, her family moved to a farm 1/2 mile west of Kelly, Kansas. She attended St. Bede's School at Kelly and was a member of the first graduating class at St. Bede's. Following her schooling, Josepha worked on the family farm.
Josepha married William A. Steinlage on October 26, 1927 at St. Bede's Church in Kelly. William was originally from St. Lucas, Iowa and was working for his brother Ferdinand when he met Josepha. They farmed and raised livestock on a farm 3 miles south of Kelly until they retired and moved into Seneca in 1974. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1977, and had been married 59 years when William died on June 2, 1987.
She was a member of Sts. Peter & Paul Church, St. Ann's Altar Society at the church, and a former member of St. Bede's Church at Kelly. She did volunteer work at the Sts. Peter & Paul Mission Center in Seneca.
Josepha enjoyed cooking and baking and did all kinds of fancy work, including crocheting. She enjoyed working outside with her flowers and garden, and always had fresh flowers in her home.
Survivors include three sons, John Steinlage and Marvin Steinlage, both of Seneca, KS, and William Steinlage of Holton, KS; four daughters, Mary Ann Olberding of Seneca, KS, Arlene Lisa of Fountain Valley, CA, Verna Strathman of Topeka, KS, and Joella King of Hoyt, KS; a brother, Alphonse Haverkamp of Seneca; two sisters, Rose Bergman of St. Benedict, KS and Alma Holthaus of Centralia, KS; 26 Grandchildren and 36 great-grandchildren.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by two sons, Gerald Steinlage on Nov. 29, 1967 and Elmer Steinlage on May 23, 1992; a grandson, Craig Steinlage on July 16, 1968; a great-grandson, Matthew Hiestand on March 17, 1997; five brothers, George, Lawrence, Frank, Edwin and Joseph Haverkamp; three sisters, Anna Boeding, Dora Steinlage and Mary Haug.

He grew up on the family farm southeast of Kelly. On February 25, 1954, he was inducted into the U.S. Army. He worked in the motor pool and was a welder. He served in Korea and was discharged in December 1955. He returned home to farm near Kelly.
They farmed southeast of Kelly for four years. In the spring of 1963 they moved to a farm southwest of Baileyville. They farmed and operated a dairy. In April of 1998 they moved to Seneca.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Church at Baileyville. He served on the church council and was a Eucharistic minister.
Survivors,  four sisters, Mary Ann Olberding of Seneca, Arlene Lisa of Fountain Valley, CA, Verna Strathman of Topeka, and Joella King of Hoyt, KS; and 10 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Gerald Steinlage on November 29, 1967 and Elmer Steinlage of May 23, 1992.

Gerald C. Steinlage, young farmer and family man of the Kelly - Corning community, died November 29, 1967 at the Kansas University Medical Center from injuries received in a farm accident.Gerald had lived all his life in the community. He was born on January 19, 1940, a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Steinlage. He graduated from the Kelly High School in 1958; attended St, Benedict's college at Atchison for one year. He and Anna Marie Stallbaumer were married on September 2, 1963 at St. Mary's church, St. Benedict. They have two little children, Elizabeth Joan, three, and Thaddeus Gerald, 16 months.
Besides his wife, his children, and his parents, Gerald leaves four brothers and four sisters. The brothers are Elmer of Corning, John of Vermillion, Marvin of Goff and William of Topeka; and the sisters are Mary Ann who is Mrs. John Olberding of Seneca, Arlene, Mrs, Randal Lowe of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Miss Verna Steinlage and Miss
Joella Steinlage of Topeka.
In his work, Gerald had a special interest in animals. The Steinlages were operating a Grade A dairy farm.
He had served in the Army Reserve and National Guard. He was a member of the St. Bede Catholic church. The
Solemn Requiem High Mass was celebrated by his uncle, Father Charles Steinlage of Iowa, Father Jerry Spencer, chaplain at Kansas University Medical Center, was deacon, Father Vincent Wavada, O.S.B., subdeacon, and Father George Klasinski, master of ceremonies. Burial was at the St. Bede cemetery with the Corning
American Legion presenting the military honors with Father Pool as chaplain.

Steinlage becomes a member of the highest college of prelates of (he Roman curia and also of tiie honorary prelates on whom the pope has conferred this title and its special privileges. He has the same eternal insignia as the prothonotaries at Rome. It is a dignity to which only the canons of the three patriachial churches of Rome and the Cathedral chapters outside of Rome, to which this privilege has been granted, can be raised. In May, 1954, Monsignor Steinlage was appointed Prothonotary Apostolic. His solpmn investiture took place Sunday, presided over by His Excellency Lawrence J. Fitsimmons at Sacred .Heart Cathedral in Amarillo. Monsignor Steinlage was born at St. Lucas, northwest of West Union, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Gerhard Steinlage. He attended St. Luke's school and later took his seminary training at the Pontifical College Josephinium, Columbus, 0hio. On June 11, 1927, he was ordained at St. Raphael's Cathedral, Dubuque. The next two years were spent as assistant pastor or at Dyersville. At the invitation of Bishop Gerkon of Amarillo, he joined that Missionary Diocese. The next two years were spent at Price Memorial college as rector. In 1938, ho was mad Domette Prelate by Pope Piul Xl. ln 1945, he was appointed pastor ot Sacred Heart Cathedral in Amarilto; which position he holds at present.

He was a farmer in St. Lucas and he planned to return to the United States in Feb. or March of 1898. He was 23 years old and 5 ft. 9 1/2 inches tall. His witness was John M. Witte of St. Lucas. On 3 March, 1893, he arrived in New York from Bremen on the Trave.
Living with them in 1900 was Joseph Steinlage, born April 1882, a nephew.

3-Anna Elizabeth Steinlage was born on 3 Nov 1903 in St. Lucas and died on 16 Jan 1993 in Seneca at age 89. She was buried at Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery. Anna married Joseph A. Bokern on 15 Apr 1925 in St. Bedes, son of Joseph Bokern and Anna Maria Kramer. Joseph was born on 3 Jul 1896 in St. Benedict, Nemaha Co., Kansas and died on 5 Apr 1970 in Seneca at age 73. They had three children.

4-Leona Bernadine Bokern was born in 1935. Leona married John Paul (Jack) Luebbe. John was born in 1934. They had four children.

In 1956 she was crowned "Miss Marymount of 1956" and reigned over the Crystal M. Ball. She was presented with a sterling silver rosary as a gift, from the student body and with a necklace from the Sisters of St. Joseph. She also won the National Catholic Youth Award. She was featured in the May issue of Youth Magazine, published by the National Council of Catholic Youth. He received his DDS at Creighton University. She taught junior high.

3-Joseph F. Steinlage was born on 16 May 1909 in St. Lucas, died on 27 Oct 1995 in Centralia, Nemaha Co., Kansas at age 86, and was buried in St. Bedes. Joseph married Mary Frances Brokamp on 14 Oct 1931, daughter of August Brokamp andBernardina Kuhlman. Mary was born on 22 May 1905 in Kelly and died on 23 Oct 1995 in Centralia at age 90. They had five children: Joan Marie, Emmett A., Galen J., Lucina (Cindy), and Ruth Ann.

Emmett A. Steinlage, 65, of Kelly, Kansas, died shortly after arrival at the Sabetha Hospital, Sabetha, Kansas on Wednesday May 15, 2002. He suffered a massive heart attack near Sabetha while working for Nemaha County.

He was born July 9, 1936, at the Sabetha Hospital, the son of Joseph F. and Mary Brokamp Steinlage. The family lived on a farm west of Kelly where he attended St. Bede's Grade School, and graduated from Kelly High School in 1954. He farmed with his dad and his brother, Galen. On May 11, 1963, he married Elizabeth "Betty" Ladish at St. Bede's Church at Kelly. They lived two miles west of Kelly for 34 years where they had a dairy and raised grain. In November of 1996 he retired from farming and began work with Nemaha County in the road and bridge department. They moved 1/4 mile north of Kelly to their present home. His wife, Betty, survives of the home. He was a member of St. Bede's Church and the St. Joseph Society at the church, the Mid-American Dairymen, and the Nemaha County Co-op. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus in Seneca where he bowled in a league; he also bowled in a league at the Seneca Bowl. Survivors besides his wife, Betty, are two sons, Timothy Steinlage of Seneca and Eron Steinlage of Emporia; a daughter, Pamela Smith of Topeka; a brother, Galen Steinlage of Corning; two sisters, Lucina "Cindy" Henry of Centralia, Kansas, and Ruth Richardson of Belton, MO; and six grandchildren. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Joan Ronnebaum, and her son, Michael, in an auto accident on March 27, 1986.

4-Joan Marie Steinlage was born on 2 Sep 1932 in Kelly and died on 27 Mar 1986 in Corning at age 53. She was buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Corning. Joan married Melvin Francis Ronnebaum on 13 Jun 1956 in St. Bedes. Melvin was born on 17 Nov 1932 in Seneca, died on 5 May 2002 in Seneca at age 69, and was buried in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Corning. They had six children.

He was a dairy farmer and stockman and lived northwest of Oneida until 1959 and later four miles west of Corning. He underwent major surgery in 1990, retired and moved to Holton.

5-Michael Gerard Ronnebaum was born on 28 Dec 1964 and died on 27 Mar 1986 in at age 21. He was buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery.

5-Marlene F. Ronnebaum was born in 1966. Marlene married Timothy G. Haverkamp. Timothy was born in 1967.

5-Annette J. Ronnebaum was born in 1969. Annette married Dean A. Evans. Dean was born in 1968.

5-Gloria Ronnebaum was born in 1969. Gloria married Daniel L. Heiman.

4-Emmett A. Steinlage was born on 9 Jul 1936 in Kelly, died on 15 May 2002 in Sabetha Hospital at age 65, and was buried in St. Bedes. Emmett married Elizabeth Ann (Betty) Ladish on 11 May 1963. Elizabeth was born in 1939. They had three children.

He owned a dairy and raised grain before he retired from farming in 1996. He then worked for the Nemaha County's road and bridge department.

LeRoy was born on 20 Dec 1914, died on 10 Feb 2005 in Seneca Health Care Center at age 90, and was buried in St. Bedes.

3-Bernard C. Steinlage was born on 18 Aug 1915 in Kelly, Nemaha Co., Kansas, died on 23 Sep 1986 in Kelly at age 71, and was buried in St. Bedes. Bernard married Margaret Broxterman Nolte on 23 Aug 1949 in Kelly. They had seven children.
